Easy Upcycle DIY Heart Tote Bag
My daughter Lanea is in love with plush fabrics, hearts and all shades of pink. I found this sweet faux fur fabric at a local store here in Berkeley. I used most of it for a pillow cover but had some left over fabric which I thought could be made into a simple applique for a market tote bag.
This simple tote is the perfect afternoon crafting project for spring. I love how the faux fur applique adds an additional texture and "pop" to a simple canvas tote.
All you need for this project are (1) faux fur fabric or any fabric you want to upcycle and (2) embroidery thread.
After cutting out the heart shape, put the right sides together and clip (or pin) all around the edges and sew together.
Once you straight stitch around the edges of the heart (1/4" seam) , leave an 1" opening to turn the heart around. Hand sew the 1" hole at the end to close up the heart. You can also do this by hand. This step prevents the fabric from coming apart and creates a clean edge.
Then use your embroidery thread to sew the heart onto the tote. If you're planning on doing this project at a kids party, just plan on making the heart appliques ahead of time and have the kids hand sew the heart onto the bag. You can also buy iron on patches as additional elements to add onto the bag's design.
Have fun crafting this simple and sweet faux fur heart shape tote!
